Order by the year each film opened in Japan. You place all 49 cards on one timeline, one at a time. You start with three lives, and ten right in a row wins a lost one back.
Every card is a Japanese animated feature that found an audience, from cult science fiction and hand-drawn fantasy to record-breaking shonen blockbusters. The director's name is printed beneath each title, and you order the films by the year they opened in Japanese cinemas. The line starts with one film and its year visible. Choose a gap for every new card. If you place it correctly the year shows; if you miss, the film still moves to its real spot but you give up one of three lives.
Many of these reached other countries a year or more after their Japanese run, and some played festivals before opening at home, so go by the Japanese release. Directors with long careers give you good chains to follow, if you can remember the order of their work. Films tied to long-running TV series are trickier, because the show may be much older than the movie. Big franchise films can be the hardest, since a show and its movies blur together in memory.
Want a longer game? On the deck tree you can tick this deck alongside any other one measured in release years and dates, and they shuffle into a single timeline together.
Here are 28 of the 49 cards you might be dealt, with 21 more in the deck. Their values stay hidden until you place them.
