How the bird wingspan ranking game works

Spread your wings: this deck ranks birds by typical adult wingspan in meters, smallest first. Under each bird is where it lives. One bird starts on the line with its wingspan showing. For each new card, choose whether it goes above or below the birds already placed. A right call reveals the wingspan; a wrong one still puts the bird where it belongs and costs one of your three lives.

Tiny songbirds, garden visitors, owls, raptors, waterbirds and great soaring seabirds all share the line. The middle is the hardest part, where hawks, owls, gulls and herons can have very similar spans. Body bulk is a poor guide: long-winged gliders spread far wider than heavy birds that look bigger on the ground. The region under the name is more about range than size, so don't lean on it.
