Order by year of release. You place all 38 cards on one timeline, one at a time. You start with three lives, and ten right in a row wins a lost one back.
The cards are heavy records: metal, punk and the hard rock around them, each with the band printed under the album title. You order them by year of release. Play opens with one album on the timeline and its year shown, and you slot each new card into whichever gap seems right. Call it correctly and the year comes up; wrong ones still put the album where it belongs but cost one of your three lives.
It covers the full family tree, from the first doom riffs and the early punk bands to the thrash, groove, nu metal, sludge and post-metal waves that followed, plus some recent hardcore. A few bands appear more than once, so knowing their run of albums pays off. Revivals make it hard: some newer bands deliberately chase an older sound, and some older ones sounded well ahead of their time.
Want a longer game? On the deck tree you can tick this deck alongside any other one measured in release years and dates, and they shuffle into a single timeline together.
This deck has been played 109 times. An average run places 9.4 cards, and 76% of all placements land in the right spot. Only 4 runs have ever placed every card.
The cards players get wrong most often:
The safest card is Toxicity, placed right 97% of the time.
Here are 28 of the 38 cards you might be dealt, with 10 more in the deck. Their values stay hidden until you place them.
