Order by word count, shortest first. You place all 25 cards in the right order, one at a time. You start with three lives, and ten right in a row wins a lost one back.
The cards are famous books, from bedtime picture books to doorstop classics, each with its author printed below the title. You sort them by how many words they contain, shortest first. Counts over ten thousand are rounded to the nearest thousand. One book starts on the line with its count showing. Slot each new card into a gap. A good call reveals the word count, while a bad one moves the book to its real spot and takes one of your three lives.
The scale is huge, so the jumps between neighbors get bigger as you climb. The picture books sit close together and are surprisingly hard to tell apart, since a page of pictures can hide very few words. Further up, page count can mislead you, because type size and translations vary. School favorites and children's chapter books are often shorter than memory suggests, and some page-turners are far longer than they feel.
Here are 25 of the 25 cards you might be dealt. Their values stay hidden until you place them.
