Order by temperature, coldest first. You place all 29 cards in the right order, one at a time. You start with three lives, and ten right in a row wins a lost one back.
Each card is something with a well-known temperature: a substance boiling or melting, a place on Earth or in space, or an everyday setting like a kitchen or a sauna. You put them in order in degrees Celsius, coldest first, and below zero counts. The line under each name explains what is being measured. One card starts on the line with its temperature showing. Slot each new card into a gap. If you're right the temperature appears; if not, it still moves to its true place and you lose one of three lives.
The cold end is full of gases that only turn liquid in extreme conditions, and they sit closer together than you might think. Around everyday life the steps are small and familiar, so the middle rewards careful thinking about your own kitchen and body. Higher up, molten metals, volcanoes and planets jump past each other in surprising ways. At the very top, the numbers get truly enormous. Watch the small print too, since a planet's figure is an average while a place on Earth is its record.
Here are 28 of the 29 cards you might be dealt, with 1 more in the deck. Their values stay hidden until you place them.
