Order by population, smallest first. You place all 20 cards in the right order, one at a time. You start with three lives, and ten right in a row wins a lost one back.
The cards are US states, ranked by how many people live in each, from the emptiest to the most crowded. Figures come from the Census Bureau's latest yearly estimates, rounded to three significant figures. One state starts on the line with its population in view. Place each new card in a gap. When you're right, the population is revealed. When you're wrong, the state moves to where it really belongs and you lose one of your three lives.
Size on the map tells you surprisingly little here. Some of the biggest states are among the emptiest, while small states in the East pack in millions. The middle of the deck is where it gets tight, with states you rarely hear about sitting close to ones you visit all the time. Fast-growing states in the South and West have climbed in recent years, so an old mental ranking may be out of date.
Here are 20 of the 20 cards you might be dealt. Their values stay hidden until you place them.
