Order by the year each emoji's character was added to Unicode. You place all 35 cards on one timeline, one at a time. You start with three lives, and ten right in a row wins a lost one back.
Every card is a single emoji with a short description under its name, and you order them by the year the character was added to Unicode. One emoji starts on the line with its year showing. Each new card asks where it belongs among those already placed. Put it in the right gap and the year is shown; put it in the wrong one and it still settles into its true place, but one of your three lives is lost.
Some of these symbols were characters long before anyone called them emoji, while others arrived in the yearly batches of recent releases. The date is when the character was added to the standard, which can come well before your phone could show it. Faces make up a big share of the deck and are the hardest to separate, since new expressions keep arriving. Food, animals and everyday objects are scattered through, so don't assume the ordinary ones came first.
Want a longer game? On the deck tree you can tick this deck alongside any other one measured in release years and dates, and they shuffle into a single timeline together.
Here are 28 of the 35 cards you might be dealt, with 7 more in the deck. Their values stay hidden until you place them.
