How the YouTube history timeline works

From viral videos to business deals, each card is a moment in YouTube's history, and you order them by the year it happened. A line under the title explains what the milestone was. The game begins with one card in place and its year in view. You then slot each new milestone before, between or after the others. Correct: the year is revealed. Incorrect: the card moves to its true spot regardless and you lose one of three lives.

The deck follows the site from its very first upload to the age of record-setting creators, taking in early viral clips, ownership and leadership changes, product launches and subscriber races. Records get broken more than once, so any card about the most views or the most subscribers needs care. Viral videos often stayed popular long after they broke, which makes them easy to place too late. The business cards are the sleepers that trip people up.

Want a longer game? On the deck tree you can tick this deck alongside any other one measured in release years and dates, and they shuffle into a single timeline together.
