Order by the year each song finished No. 1 on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100. You place all 40 cards on one timeline, one at a time. You start with three lives, and ten right in a row wins a lost one back.
Each card is a song that finished a year at the top of Billboard's Year-End Hot 100, the biggest hit of its year by the chart's own tally. The artist is printed under the title. You put the songs in order of the year they topped the list. One song starts on the line with its year shown. For every new card, pick the gap where you think it belongs: correct, and the year appears; wrong, and the song moves to its true place, which leaves you one life closer to the end of a three-life run.
This is a selection rather than every year, so the space between neighboring cards can be wide or tiny. It runs from the early rock and roll era through Beatlemania, disco, the MTV years and hip-hop's rise to the streaming age. A year-end winner is often a song that peaked early in its chart year, so it can feel like it belongs to the year before. Some acts appear more than once, and that helps only if you know which of their hits came first.
Want a longer game? On the deck tree you can tick this deck alongside any other one measured in release years and dates, and they shuffle into a single timeline together.
Here are 28 of the 40 cards you might be dealt, with 12 more in the deck. Their values stay hidden until you place them.
