Order these Smash fighters by the year each character first appeared in a game. You place all 40 cards on one timeline, one at a time. You start with three lives, and ten right in a row wins a lost one back.
Each card is a fighter from the Super Smash Bros. roster, and you're placing them by the year the character first showed up in any game, not when they joined Smash. The series they come from is printed under the name, along with the company when it isn't Nintendo. One fighter starts on the timeline with a year showing. Put each new fighter in the gap you believe is right: correct, and the year appears; incorrect, and the fighter moves to its true place while one of your three lives goes.
The roster reaches from the arcade and handheld days through every Nintendo console to recent third-party guests. The trap is that many characters debuted somewhere other than their own series, as a sidekick, a villain or a cameo in another game, so they can be older than their headline titles suggest. Characters from the same franchise often arrived far apart. Guests from other publishers are a mixed bag: some go back as far as the Nintendo veterans, others are quite recent.
Want a longer game? On the deck tree you can tick this deck alongside any other one measured in release years and dates, and they shuffle into a single timeline together.
Here are 28 of the 40 cards you might be dealt, with 12 more in the deck. Their values stay hidden until you place them.
